Wolaita Development Association has been doing many projects centered on people with disabilities with financial support from CBM Ethiopia. With financial support from the same donor organization, awareness training was provided on the concept of the “Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR)” project implemented by the WODA.
Disability is a fact of life and can happen to anyone, but in developing countries like Ethiopia, disability is seen as an individual tragedy or action.
As a result, it is not hidden that there are many difficult things for people with disabilities, from getting an education to the world of work, the supply of educational supplementary books for people with disabilities is limited, they do not consider people with disabilities when working on different infrastructures, the wrong attitude is observed by society, and so on.
In order to overcome these problems, creating awareness for society around the disabled and multi-faceted activities have seen a certain amount of change in attitudes, policy and other government system adjustments, but it is believed that there will be a lot of homework to be done in the future. Wolaita Development Association is also working to raise sufficient awareness about disability in the community with the financial support it receives from CBM Ethiopia.
This DIDRR project is implemented in Damot Sore, Damot Woyde and Damot Gale woreda of Wolaita Zone and works to enable disabled people to participate in various professions and to ensure inclusiveness of disabled people. It is awareness training focused on the benefits of inclusion in the mitigation process. Department of Agriculture, Labor and Social Affairs, Keble administrations, representatives of disabled associations, representatives of WODA woreda executive and project staff participated in the training.
